Wander the World – Motorcyclist travels from Cyprus to Cape Town

Nikos Leonitis, a Greek Cypriot-American adventurer, shares his transformative 43,000-kilometer motorcycle journey from Cyprus to Cape Town, a route that took him through Southern Europe, North Africa, and the entire length of the African continent. Originally from the U.S., Nikos moved to Cyprus in 2016, drawn by his cultural roots, but it was a life-changing trip to Cape Town in 2015 that ignited his passion for travel. What began as a desire to explore Southeast Asia evolved into an ambitious overland ride across Africa, fueled by minimalism, volunteerism, and a deep connection to the communities he encountered. Despite facing immense challenges—including visa costs exceeding €2,000, mechanical breakdowns due to a rare bike model, and difficult border crossings—Nikos persevered, supported by a global overland travel community. His journey was defined not just by physical endurance but by profound human connections, including a powerful story in the Gambia where he helped reunite a stranded young man with his home, uniting people of different faiths and backgrounds in solidarity. The experience, he reflects, was less about the destination and more about the life-altering moments of kindness, resilience, and shared humanity along the way.
