In this pivotal session of The Company of the Dragon, the Company arrives at Whitewall just as a massive Lunar army prepares to assault the besieged city. The discovery that Solara has vanished without a trace casts a shadow over the group, but they resolve to act. With the city on the brink of destruction and an army of over 5,000 Lunars encamped below, the Company faces a desperate choice: flee or attempt a heroic rescue. Guided by Jodi’s wisdom and the legacy of their ancestor Hort, the group undertakes a perilous Hero Quest through the spirit realm, navigating a desolate battlefield of the dead, confronting spectral guardians, and earning powerful boons. Miru, burdened by self-doubt and past failures, finds strength in her companions’ unwavering support and ultimately summons the dragon Shabashok. The quest culminates in the opening of a hidden passage through an ancient plinth, allowing the evacuation of survivors. In a climactic battle, Miru defeats her former commander Estar Standfast with a dramatic pike strike, while the Company fights to hold the line. The session ends with the survivors escaping through the portal just as the Lunars unleash devastating 'crater makers' to obliterate Whitewall, leaving the Company standing on Vorda Hill, forever changed by their journey.
True leadership often emerges not from strength, but from vulnerability and the courage to keep going despite failure.
Companionship and belief in one another can be the most powerful magic of all.
Heroism isn't about winning battles—it's about doing what's right, even when the odds are impossible.
The past is not a burden; it's a guide. Ancestral paths can light the way through the darkest times.
Even in the face of annihilation, hope and action create a legacy worth preserving.
Opening & Setup: The Company's Arrival at Whitewall
The episode opens with a Patreon thank-you and a land acknowledgment. The Company, now merged with a fake 'Company of the Dragon,' is traveling toward Whitewall. Miru discovers Solara has vanished without a trace, leaving only an empty tent and no note. The group is in early winter in northern Sartar, moving through rugged terrain toward the mesa city of Whitewall, which is under a massive Lunar siege.
The Siege of Whitewall: Assessing the Impossible Odds
The Company's scouts report a massive Lunar army—over 5,000 strong—surrounding Whitewall, with earthen ramps built up the mesa. The situation is dire: the Company has only 250 members and no viable way to breach the siege. Jodi, the sage, suggests a desperate plan: follow the path of their ancestor Hort to enter the city through a mythic, spirit-world journey. The group agrees, and the stage is set for a Hero Quest.
The Hero Quest: Walking the Path of the Dead
“I don't know how to explain to you what it feels like to call the dragon and have it not come. Well, I believe in it. Would it be better if I'm here with you as you try?”
The Return & the Final Stand: Opening the Plinth
The Company returns to the physical world at Whitewall, now under siege. They are recognized by King Broyanne and the defenders. Shabashok appears and confirms the ancient plinth is the key to escape. The Company prepares to hold the line while Miru and Shabashok work to open the portal. The group is equipped with new powers: fire, water, earth, air, and darkness. They prepare for the final battle against the Lunars, with the fate of the city hanging in the balance.
The Battle & The Fall: Evacuation and Legacy
“We were rolling so good. The 5 to summon the dragon and the 1 to open the portal. I know, it was perfect.”
“I don't know how to explain to you what it feels like to call the dragon and have it not come. Well, I believe in it. Would it be better if I'm here with you as you try?”
“You have summoned me. Okay. And I feel like Miru prepares to say that we were here and then but she just starts sobbing. It's like, so are left too. I'm all alone.”
“I don't know what to do. I don't know how to do this without my friends. Your friends are well and they are on their own path. But yours is the path that was chosen to intersect with mine.”
