Carrie Olson from the United Way of Whiteside County joins the Regional Media Podcast Network to discuss the upcoming 25th anniversary of their 'Let's Feed Our Children' summer meal program, which begins May 27th and runs through August 5th. The program serves 17 locations across the community with free lunches every Wednesday, relying entirely on volunteer labor and community donations. With demand growing 207% over the past four years, the organization is preparing for a projected 50,000 meals served this summer—up from 46,000 in 2025. A major focus is a fruit cup drive, asking for individual fruit cups, applesauce, and other canned fruits to be donated at churches, banks, and wellness centers. The team also urgently needs nearly 1,000 volunteers, especially for packing and transportation, with new packing days added to accommodate growth. The assembly line process, supported by Walmart Distribution Center logistics, is highly organized and efficient. Additionally, a free nonprofit networking event on May 19th will feature a speaker on board fundraising strategies, emphasizing relationship-building over forced donation asks. The program continues to thrive thanks to strong community support and strategic planning, including using New Life Church’s space and adjusting schedules around holidays and events like Vacation Bible School.
