In this deeply personal and reflective episode of I'll Have Another with Lindsey Hein Podcast, Olympic and world champion runner Jenny Simpson returns to discuss her transition from elite competition to a new chapter in her life. The conversation unfolds in person at Fleet Feet's headquarters in Carrboro, North Carolina, marking a rare and intimate moment for both hosts. Simpson opens up about the emotional weight of her gold medal win at the 2011 World Championships—her first major title—where she crossed the finish line not with relief, but pure, unfiltered joy. She reflects on the mental discipline required to succeed at the highest level, emphasizing that racing is about knowing your capabilities and pouring everything into the final stretch. The podcast then pivots to her post-retirement adventures: running seven marathons across seven continents in seven days, a journey that launched her into a season of 'yes' and taught her the power of stepping into the unknown. She shares the physical and emotional toll of the Great World Race, the deep bonds formed with fellow runners, and the profound support of her husband Jason during the grueling final marathon in Miami. Following that, she and Jason embarked on a 50-state, 50-week road trip in an RV, visiting running stores, clubs, and communities across America—experiences that deepened her connection to the running world and inspired her new role as Chief Running Officer at Fleet Feet. Simpson discusses how this role allows her to bring an athlete’s lens to community-building, product guidance, and leadership, while also grappling with the shift from being the star to being a steward of the sport. She reflects on aging, identity, and the importance of rest, revealing that her morning runs now serve as a sacred form of mental restoration. Throughout, she emphasizes the universal truths of running—doubt, resilience, community—and how these lessons continue to shape her life beyond the track. The episode closes with a heartfelt message: the best is still ahead.
Racing success comes from knowing your capabilities and trusting your preparation, not just hoping for a breakthrough.
Stepping into the unknown—like running seven marathons in seven days—can be transformative and empower you to say 'yes' to life’s next chapter.
The most powerful connections in running are built not on podiums, but on shared struggle, vulnerability, and mutual support.
Rest is not the opposite of effort—it’s essential for sustainable performance and well-being, especially in leadership and life.
Your identity doesn’t have to be tied to your past achievements; you can reinvent yourself and still be your best self.

In-Person Interview & Jenny’s Early Career
“I didn't have, like I said, so I had run the steeplechase up to that point. That was the first year that I ever really specialized and focused in the 1500. So when I got to the final and I get there, and I remember even on the bus on the way, I don't know if it was on the bus or if it was once we actually got to the stadium, but I remember kind of casually saying to my coach Julie Benson, like, I mean, 3 in 12. right? Like you have a 25% chance that you're going to walk away with a medal and why not me?”
The Mental Game: Patience, Confidence, and Doubt
“We all get nervous. We all have this energy inside of us and you get to choose whether you put it into projecting a positive outcome or projecting a negative outcome. When you project positive, that's when you feel excited. And then when you take that nervous energy and you project negative outcomes, that's anxiety.”
The Great World Race: Seven Marathons in Seven Days
“I came back from that experience. And when you do something that hard on such last minute notice, you realize I can do anything. And I really felt empowered to just take on more unknown.”
“The best is ahead. Yeah. I mean, and spoken from a person who got to be on the top of the world. Like I was on the top of the world. It was an incredible season of my life. And I still, I know, I know in my bones that the best of what I can do is still ahead of me.”
